Provision of Religious Observance and Time for Reflection in Oaklands School

Throughout the year at Oaklands School we hold a range of assemblies where pupils and staff are involved in either religious observation or are given time for reflection. There are 4 such scheduled events in our school calendar. These are for Easter, Christmas, Harvest and Remembrance Day. Other religious observations/times fo r reflection may be added throughout the year and parents will be informed of any additional dates in advance.

Parents and young people can opt out of any religious observance assemblies and/or time for reflection assemblies and other curricular activities will be provided at that time. This information will be shared with parents on an annual basis via the School Website.

Provision of Religious Observance and Time for Reflection in Oaklands School is now available in the section POLICIES AND DOCUMENTS

MOVE DAY Wednesday 17th May

The theme of national MOVE day 2017 is Holiday so we decided to turn Oaklands School into a beach resort where we can all enjoy and experience the sights, sounds and activities that are part of a seaside holiday. These include beach games, rock pools, bucket and spade, flying kites, fishing and many more. Of course there will also be an ice-cream parlour.

The MOVE programme is an activity based programme which uses the combined knowledge of education, therapy and the family to teach children with significant mobility problems the skills of sitting, standing, walking and transferring, to the very best of their ability. As a result, the MOVE programme gives these children the opportunity to take greater control of their lives, leading to opportunities to make choices and increased, and highly valued, independence.

At Oaklands, more than 20 pupils are on the MOVE programme and there have been some great success stories. The children and staff work very hard to achieve the MOVE goals and this day allows them to celebrate their efforts and show off their accomplishments.

Swimming Song Signifier

Our latest Song Signifier Video is now available in the section:

OUR SCHOOL/SUPPORTING PUPILS’ COMMUNICATION

This song can be sung as you leave to go swimming, on your way to swimming, as you get changed for swimming, as you head to the pool…or any variation of these. As with all song signifiers, it will help make clearer what is about to happen, and can help calm nerves, help focus so you decide when and how it is best to use it.

MARCH – New record month!

New record month! We’ve had over 2,800 visits to our website so far in March.

Today we have achieved a new visits record. This is our best month ever since we opened our new website just a year ago, and there is still another full week to go. What an amazing way of celebrating the 1st anniversary of our new website.

We are going to reach 100 followers very soon and we want to do something special to celebrate it. There will be a prize draw for all of our followers as soon as we reach our objective of 100 followers.

Thanks for your support!

Lothian Disability Sports Spring Gala

On Sunday 19th March Maddie and Cameron headed down to Prestonpans to represent Team Oaklands in The Lothian Disability Sports Spring Gala. We have spent the last few weeks practising for this event in our weekly swim sessions.

Both our swimmers swam 25m in an aided race. The first race saw Cameron swim 25m freestyle, with an entry time of 2.40.53. This is Cameron’s 3rd time representing Oaklands and with everyone’s encouragement he smashed his time to gain a new personal best of 2.35.21. Next up was Maddie, who has just learned to swim 25m. Full of excitement and enjoying the atmosphere and attention she took her first swimming gala in her stride and stormed up the pool.  This was a brilliant achievement and both Maddie, Cameron and their families were proud of their results and medals. Well done to you both and a big Thank you to Michelle and Amy for all their support and giving up their Sunday morning.

Donation to Clowndoctors (video)

Class S1/S2 from Oaklands School have had success with their enterprise project. Last term they raised £64.19 making bread, scones and cakes.

Last week they donated their enterprise profits to Clowndoctors. We are all really happy to be able to donate to them because the pupils love interacting with the clowndoctors and they do a fantastic job in our school and many other places.

Rights Respecting Week

Oaklands School had their first ever Rights Week (6th of March). Pupils, from nursery through to Senior Phase, experienced a range of activities related to the Rights of the Child. Throughout the week pupils joined in with water hunt role plays, den building, sensory food bags and rights themed games. In addition, pupils took part in International School Lunch day where pupils sampled the delights of Barbados.

The week culminated with a Rights Respecting Assembly with parents and partners. Pupils paraded around the gym hall with their flags before splitting up into groups; one group carried out a Rights Hunt in the woodland whilst the others took part in Rights games. Everyone had so much fun as well as progresting towards our Level 2 Award.
