Spruce Class

March 2023

Spruce class have had a lovely and very happy Spring term. We’ve had the first of our 14th birthdays and Leon has welcomed his little sister Nora in to the world!  Congratulations Leon and family! We continue to enjoy the regular highlights of Performing Arts, wheelchair dancing and the Clown Doctors, and some of us have been lucky enough to have swimming and rebound sessions.  Always popular!  We’ve all been working hard on our targets and making great progress.  Our biggest highlights this term, however, have been the chance to get out and about on the bus and our weekly sessions with Katie from Drake Music.  Our Wednesday trips out have been wonderful, and we are always alert, happy and engaged when away from school (can’t think why!)  Katie has been collaborating with us on creating a rock anthem to end all rock anthems.  We’ve been using switches and iPads to add guitar solos and riffs to the track and have even recorded some vocals.  Next comes the music video – watch this space!

September 2022

Spruce class has had a fantastic start to the new school year. We have a new class name, a new class team and a lovely new classroom on the sunny secondary side! Spruce class has wasted no time getting back in to school life, baking muffins, looking for signs of Autumn in the woods and enjoying some cuddles with Molly the school therapet dog. We’ve been working hard on using our equipment as much as possible (for example the Innowalk) again after the Summer break. We have also taken on the job of looking after the school worm farm – wish us luck with that! Our topic this term is ‘My World’, which is perfect as our worlds start opening up again and we can start to explore the world around us.  A few of us have been out on the bikes near school, and it has been lovely riding around the community and greeting people as we whizz by!

The class teacher in Spruce this year is Nancy Dundas.

Special School, City of Edinburgh Council.
