MOVE DAY: Seaside Holiday!

We celebrated our annual MOVE day with a “Seaside Holiday” themed day. The morning began with a parade around the school to the sounds of “Oh I do like to be beside the seaside” and “We’re all going on a summer holiday”. After a brief word of welcome by David (pupil) and Morna, the pupils were free to explore all the seaside related activities.

The nursery was turned into an underwater sea scape which was based on the story “Barry – the fish with fingers” with emphasis on the bubbles: walking over bubble wrap was great fun! Class 1’s theme was Boats and they had changed the wheelchair swing into a big boat as well as having other boat related activities in class. Class 2 became the Ice cream parlour with real icecream lollies and cones and this was enjoyed by everyone. Class 3 focused on sounds of the seaside where the sounds of dolphins, whales, seagulls, waves etc. where recorded on BigMacks. The St Crispins class had made sensory boxes with different sea side related objects such as shells, seaweed and sand. Class 4 went fishing and encouraged everyone to do the same and S1-S2 was focussing on making (and flying) kites. S3’s theme was sand, bucket and spade (ofcourse no seaside is complete without this activity!) and the senior class had planned beach games so there was beach volley ball in the hall and water pistols and guns in the courtyard. At the end, everyone came together in the hall to make waves with a large parachute. In the afternoon, Clydebuilt Puppet Theatre came and performed “The Lighthouse Keeper” to all pupils.   It was a brilliant day and even the sun shone…

Class 2 visit the 5 Sisters Zoo

Class 2 got the chance to go on a class trip to the 5 Sisters Zoo. They had a wonderful Animal Handling Session where the children got to meet a Python, Giant Snail and a Tenrec (that looks very like a Hedgehog, but is actually related to the Elephant!). They also had time for a short walk around the zoo and saw the Wolves, a Fishing Cat, Bears, the Lions and lots of Monkeys and Birds.

Oaklands Marathon festival Friday 26th May

Get the running shoes on!

This year the organizers of the Marathon Festival have kindly offered us the chance to participate in the Edinburgh Marathon, which is being held on Sunday 28th May. We have entered a staff team into the Hairy Haggis Relay.

CaptureWe would like you to help us support Morna, Sharon, Lauryn and Karen in this event by joining us to collectively run a Marathon. All pupils will be given the chance to be sponsored to walk, run, cycle etc as far as they can to help us reach the 26 miles.

We would like to make this a family event and if you would like to come along and support your child around Oaklands School Marathon course we would love to have you there. Look out for the information in your child’s school bag.

Thank you to the Lloyds Banking Group

Members of staff from the Lloyds banking group made short work of a list of jobs on the in-service day on Thursday 4th May. They were weeding, sweeping, tidying, cutting back and generally getting our playgrounds ready for use in the term ahead.

Here you can see the group in a photo having made short work of painting the soft top area in the secondary playground. The good news is that they will be back again on the 19th of May to complete more tasks in our playground and millennium wood area.

A huge ‘thank you’ to the Lloyds Banking Group.

Class 3 visit Dynamic Earth

Class 3 had a fabulous outing to Dynamic Earth. We were able to explore the exhibits using all our senses. We travelled back in time to the beginning of the Earth and experienced volcanoes, icebergs, exotic creatures and much more. Lunch was fun too as we ate next to another school group who sang lots of songs that kept us entertained. It was a beautiful sunny day and we had a stroll around the building and visited the ice cream van.

S1/S2 visit the Riverside Museum in Glasgow

A couple of weeks ago S1/S2 went to the Riverside Museum in Glasgow (Scotland’s museum of transport and travel). During the trip they learnt about Transport and Travel which is their main theme for this term. Some of the pupils also went inside the tall ship which was built in 1896 on the River Clyde.
